Completing Assignments

In school and in the workplace, success depends on your ability to complete assignments. Use the following tips:

  1. Understand the assignment. Be sure you know what you are supposed to do.
  2. Know the due date. Check when the assignment must be turned in.
  3. Review the grading process. Understand how the assignment will be graded. If there is a rubric or other assessment tool, study it.
  4. Find out about help options. Know whether you can work with a partner, use the Internet, use a calculator, attend a help session, or otherwise get assistance.
  5. Divide your time. Think about how long the assignment will take and how much time you have to complete it. Decide when you will work on it in order to get it done on time.
  6. Collect the materials and tools you need. If you are doing the work in different locations, take the materials with you, whether on paper or digitally or both.
  7. Choose a place to work. Find a spot that is comfortable and free of distractions.
  8. Note any problem areas. If you have questions or concerns, contact classmates or the teacher.
  9. Welcome the teacher’s ideas. Getting feedback and suggestions on a current project will improve your performance now and on future assignments.

Your Turn Rate your performance in terms of how you complete assignments. Use a scale of 1 (never) to 5 (always). What tips do you need to follow more closely? Choose two of those points and write about how you could improve on each one.
