Building a Wiki

A wiki is a Web site that many people build together using a Web browser. Wikis provide editing tools to contributors who are signed in, and then display the finished pages to the public afterward. You’ve probably heard of the Wikipedia site, an online encyclopedia edited by volunteers around the world. The Web has other specialized wikis, from medical dictionaries to recipe collections to game sites. You might use a wiki to brainstorm ideas (with links to related information), assemble a group report, publish a Web site, compose an instruction manual, and so on.

Your Turn In a small group, choose a topic suitable for a 6- to 12-page wiki. Build your wiki and then write a group report detailing what was learned from the process. What advice or “best practices” can you share with other wiki builders? Add the report to your wiki as an “About This Project” page.
