Communicating
Your brain needs other brains. Human beings invented language so that they could share ideas with each other. Listening, speaking, writing, and reading all play a role as your brain communicates with others.
Every communication situation has five basic parts: sender, message, medium, receiver, and context. Whether you’re writing a blog post, speaking to your friend’s parents, or listening to a physics lecture, these five parts are influencing the situation.
The Communication Situation
Sender (Speaker or Writer)
Message (Topic and Purpose)
Medium (Form)
Receiver (Listener or Reader)
Context (Time and Place)
Your Turn Think about a recent communication situation you experienced. Identify each of the five parts. Was the communication successful or unsuccessful? What challenges did you face or could you have faced in the situation?
