A Comparison-Contrast Essay
A comparison-contrast essay explores the similarities and differences between two or more topics. (See pages 460–462.)
B Cause-Effect Essay
A cause-effect essay analyzes and explains the causes, the effects, or both the causes and effects of a particular event, occurrence, or situation. (See pages 463–465.)
C Lab Report
A lab report documents an experiment, from the beginning question and hypothesis to the conclusion. (See pages 466–469.)
D Argument Essay
An argument essay discusses a debatable issue, taking a particular stand or position. It supports the position with strong evidence and reliable logic. (See pages 469–471.)
E Problem-Solution Essay
A problem-solution essay identifies an unresolved problem and offers a solution or solutions to address it. (See pages 472–473.)
F Literary Analysis
A literary analysis examines the elements—theme, style, tone, etc.—in a piece of literature. The example analysis in this chapter analyzes a poem’s theme. (See pages 474–475.)
